How to measure kitchen cabinets?
Proper measurements are the most critical component of your dream kitchen’s design. Accurate measuring and space planning helps to ensure that ordering, installation and the general functionality of the kitchen is well thought out during the design process and throughout the life of the cabinets. Follow our handy step-by-step guide to learn how to accurately measure your kitchen for kitchen cabinets or Countertops .
What you’ll need:
- A tape measurer
- Graph Paper
The measuring process
Step 1: Working clockwise, preferably from a inside corner, measure the overall length of each wall in your kitchen and then write it down. It helps if you draw a rough sketch of the room using grid or graph paper and then label each wall accordingly.
Step 2: Again working clockwise, measure the wall’s height. Use the tape measure to find the precise length of the wall, from floor to ceiling, including trim. During this step, you’ll also want to make note of any architectural elements such as recessed ceilings or permanent fixtures, which should be taken into account.
Step 3: Identify and measure all windows, large appliances, plumbing connections, vents, outlets, furniture and anything else that you plan to keep in the room after installing your new cabinets. Record your findings and note the center line of all permanent features.
Step 4: Start planning your layout. Note locations where drawers, pullout shelves or trash cans will be most convenient (keep in mind that cabinets are built in 3″ increments)
